I remember my mom making new year's "cookies" when I was younger. Portzelky are raisin fritters (basically homemade doughnuts), and they're delicious! When Derek and I got married I decided that they would become a new year's tradition for us. I missed making them last year because we were travelling, but I decided that we must have them this year! The new recipe I used from Mennonite Girls Can Cook was great!
My oil temperature ended up being a little too high, so my portzelky were a little doughy on the inside. I finished them off in the oven as a quick fix.
Derek obligingly rolled the fritters in cinnamon sugar. I cut off his head in this picture, but really, we're only interested in the food, right?
The finished product! It's a good thing I only make these once a year, because they are NOT a good idea to keep around the house - I would eat them ALL.
Happy New Year, everyone! May the year ahead be filled with the joy of many blessings, and the assurance of peace.
